In the last few months after crafting thought-provoking articles, I reached a milestone & acquired 1000 followers on medium, In return to thank my community, I wrote this blog post chronicling my journey and received numerous direct messages on Twitter and LinkedIn, with people asking for advice and guidance on how they too could attain such a following.
In the true spirit of my supportive community, I am happily sharing my insights and experience, helping you to reach your goals.
Reaching 1000 followers on Medium can be a challenging task, but with the right strategy and a little bit of persistence, it is definitely achievable. In this article, I will share the steps I took to reach 1000 followers on Medium and how you can do the same!
Let’s begin, I am sharing a step-by-step approach!
1. Establish Yourself as an Expert:
Write high-quality, informative, and engaging content on a regular basis.
Narrow down your focus to one niche or industry and write about topics that you are passionate about and relevant to your target audience.
For example, if you are a marketer, write about marketing topics.
Initially, when I started, I was writing about my life journey, and marketing & even you can see a few articles on finance also on my stories section.
The reason is, I am an Algorithmic option trader and that is just one of my revenue streams as a freelancer. ( will share more about it, if you are interested ) Later on, only to realize I had to niche down and focus on only one topic/niche/industry and I chose marketing because I am a freelancer & consultant in marketing.
Finally, I made sure to write on topics that I was passionate about and that I knew would be of interest to my target audience. Which impacted my views & engagement positively while showing some good growth.
2. Optimize Your Profile:
Include relevant keywords in your profile, bio, and article tags to improve searchability.
For example, use keywords related to your niche in your profile, such as “Growth Hacker” or “Content Marketing Consultant”.
This will make it easier for people to find your articles when they are searching for specific topics on Medium.
3. Engage with Others:
Respond to comments on your articles, share other users’ articles, and reach out to collaborate on articles.
Building relationships and a sense of community will help you grow your following.
Be respectful and engage in context. If you come across an article related to your niche, don’t promote yourself, but find relevant articles and opportunities to connect.
I did this by actively engaging with other Medium users, I was able to build relationships and a sense of friendly community.
You can see the read ratio is 100% and the majority of folks responded back and connected with those in my niche. (Win-Win!)
As a marketer, it’s important to promote yourself and build relationships with others, but it’s important to do it in the right context.
For example, if you come across an article on— “The insightful stories on javascript development”, it’s best not to use that as an opportunity to promote yourself ( if you are not from the same niche) as it may be viewed as disrespectful to the author. Instead, focus on finding relevant articles and opportunities to connect with others in your industry.
4. Share Your Articles:
Share your articles on social media platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn to expand your reach and attract new followers.
For example, you can tweet about your latest article and include the link.
5. Use Medium’s Promotion Feature:
Consider using Medium’s promotion feature to reach a wider audience and attract new followers.
For example, you can promote your best-performing article to reach a new audience.
6. Be Consistent:
Aim to write at least 4–8 articles per month and share them on all your social media platforms.
Writing frequently, ideally on a weekly basis, will help you build your audience more quickly on Medium.
For example, you can schedule your articles to be published on the same day each week, so your followers know when to expect new content.
Conclusion: Reaching 1000 followers on Medium is a challenging, but achievable goal.
